A little over a year ago, Danny Choo asked his fans to help get Culture Japan in television markets in their area. The idea was to crowd source promotion efforts across the world and to spread the love of Japanese culture. I decided to take on the challenge.
First, I looked at my channel listing (I was using Time Warner Cable at the time) and put every channel into a spreadsheet. From there, I narrowed down the list to channels that might be interested in a television show about Japanese culture & looked for info on decision makers for each (which, honestly, I don’t remember the titles of now.)
Below is the email I used to contact these folks:
Good afternoon,My name is Dan Bough, regional producer for the television series ‘Culture Japan.’ We are currently looking to syndicate the show on a television station serving Central NY, offering an incentive of free exclusive broadcast rights. Culture Japan is in its second season, and will be broadcast through the Mnet channel in the United States beginning early November. Its first season was broadcast in Japan on Tokyo MX TV, across asia on the Animax Network and streaming through CrunchyRoll.com.As the title implies, Culture Japan discusses Japanese culture and what’s more, it lives that culture through behind the scenes filming of Japanese businesses, ‘cultural amusement’ parks, festivals, cities, schools and more. During season one, the show’s creator and host, Danny Choo, brought us the following:-Summer Wonder Festival-Good Smile Company (We see how collectable figures are made)-Edo Wonderland-Tokyo Game Show 2010-Tokyo Metropolitan Kokusai High School (Japanese cultural festival)-Akihabara Tour (Clone Factory, Hobby Station, Maid Cafe, Volks Store, etc)-Ita-G Festival 2010, Japan’s underground Bicycle Storage-Japanese shopping streets, Fujisawa High School tour-Japanese Archery, and Pachinko-Anime Festival Asia 2010 (AFAX)-Shibuya Tour-Production I.G. (demonstration on how anime is made)-‘Food for Display’ production-Obitsu Doll Factory-Japanese Inn (Ryokan) tourSeason 2 will begin broadcasting in Japan at the end of October 2011.Season 1 Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlwLA8qssc8Season 1 Digest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMvmS5GZPB4Season 1 Full: http://www.crunchyroll.com/culture-japanMore about Danny Choo: http://www.dannychoo.com/post/en/25018/Danny+Choo.htmlI know this is a lot of information and I appreciate you taking the time to go through it. I didn’t get any feedback, but I honestly didn’t push very hard. As I remember it, my only job was to get the conversation started. Once that was done, Danny & his team would take it from there (the call to action has been taken down from the live post, but you can see the original here.)
What I should have done, had I wanted to spend the time and energy persuing this, is start making phone calls. A little social engineering goes a long way when trying to get your foot in the door. Maybe next time.
